These figures make adjustments from the last sales figures previously reported.

The coins were sold individually in proof or uncirculated version, within a 3 coin proof set, and several specially packaged collector sets. Most offerings went on sale January 15, 2008. Sales of all products containing Bald Eagle Commemorative coins ended on December 12, 2008.

With sales of the 2008 Bald Eagle Commemorative now at an end, the final reported sales figures can provide a good indication the mintages.

A number of different products were offered during the year, which incorporate one or more Bald Eagle Commemorative Coins. A Three Coin Set was offered which contained proof versions of each of the coins. A Young Collector’s Set was offered which contained an uncirculated version of the Half Dollar. A Coin and Medal Set was offered which included an uncirculated version of the Silver Dollar. Finally, the American Legacy Set included a proof version of the Silver Dollar.

A table showing the last reported sales figrues for each of these products appears below.

The information from the table above has been used to compute estimated 2008 Bald Eagle Commemorative mintages which appear below. This was calculated by adding together the individual sales figures with the set sales for each Bald Eagle coin component. The final mintages have not yet been reported by the US Mint, but this should provide a good approximation.

Sales of the Bald Eagle Commemorative coins officially ended on December 12, 2008 at 5:00 PM. As such, the coins are no longer available directly from the United States Mint. The only place to purchase them will now be the secondary market.

Although none of the coins reached their individual maximum authorized mintages, sales were relatively strong across the board. The popular subject matter combined with beautiful designs made the coins popular with collectors and the broader public. Possible factors working against the series were the proliferation of other US Mint products and a volatile precious metals market.

The 2008 American Legacy Collection also went off sale the same date. This set contains a proof version of the Bald Eagle Silver Commemorative. The collection sold about 20,000 sets, but is already commanding a premium on the secondary market. The primary driver for this was the low mintage and early sell out for the 2008 Proof Set. The Legacy Collection contains all of the coins included in this proof set.

In a few more weeks when the dust has settled, I will do another review of the sales figures to see if we can predict some final mintages and some conclusions on the program.
